Funky Flamingo 2nds Resale Shop
Located at NE 6th Ave. & NE 13th St. in the Middle River Terrace area of Fort Lauderdale, the Funky Flamingo 2nds resale shop was designed to serve as a model of community economic development: a hub for jobs & job training for the young adults aged out of state foster care & relative care residing in our Supportive Housing Project/Program (most of whom were homeless before coming to our apartments), as well as eliminating blight, creating a new small business & a business service to residents in a transitional area.
Our vision of a vibrant community thrift store was born out of our collecting “gently used” home furnishings for the 25 aged-out foster youth (and 8 small children) residing here. Further, H.O.M.E.S. owned a dilapidated commercial building that needed significant rehab. Lastly, through two years of work with our youth tenants, we knew that jobs and job skills were crucial to their success in becoming self-sufficient productive members of our community.
This project was made possible through a number of community grants and partnerships. These include building renovation funds (City of Fort Lauderdale: CDBG-R), funding for the Resale Shop Manager & the Job Coaching & Paid Internship Program Director (City of Ft. Lauderdale: CDBG), start-up costs (Salah Foundation), and funding to pay youth salaries during their internships (Jim Moran Foundation & Community Foundation of Broward). H.O.M.E.S. is currently collecting quality used home furnishings, accessories, art work, etc.., which will be either sold in the new store, or used to furnish apartments for our youth. Local businesses participate in our internship program, furnishing meaningful work experiences to our youth (with the youth being paid from our grants).
Profits from the resale store will be used in programs and projects carrying out H.O.M.E.S. charitable mission in Broward County – including our supportive housing program for former foster youth.
