Youth Job Coaching and Paid Internship Program

LEARNING JOB SKILLS, AND FINDING JOBS THAT PAY A LIVING WAGE, ARE KEYS TO LIFE SUCCESS FOR THE YOUTH TENANTS WE SERVE, WHO HAVE AGED OUT OF FLORIDA’S FOSTER & RELATIVE CARE SYSTEM!

Otherwise, their futures most likely include homelessness, substance abuse, violence & crime (either as a chronic victim or as a perpetrator, and a dismal future  for their own children.

That’s why we started the Youth Job Coaching & Paid Internship Program.  Thanks to our program funders, we have a Job Coach on staff who provides hands-on individual and group job coaching to our youth – most of whom have never held a real job, or held only minimum wage fast food jobs.  From helping them improve their appearance and work place manners, to creating a resume, to mock interviews and  career apptitude testing – the Job Coach helps get our youth ready for the world of work.

Youth are then placed in 13 week Paid Job Internships with local businesses in our community, which coincide with the apptitudes, interest and/or skills of the particular youth.

Each Intern is paid from private foundation grant funding for his or her work -  20 hours per week at $10 per hour for the entire Internship period.  H.O.M.E.S. has a Contract with the local business firm and another Contract with the Youth Intern.   The Job Coach provides oversight, assistance and troubleshooting whenever needed.

Each week, the participating businesses certify the hours and acceptable performance of their Intern (or report any problems) to H.O.M.E.S.  so that we can make sure our youth Interns are meeting performance standards.

OUR GOAL WITH THIS PROGRAM IS TO ACQUAINT OUR YOUTH TENANTS WITH NEW POSSIBILITIES FOR THEIR FUTURES – and to build their resumes, give them meaningful job experiences, teach them good work habits & what is expected in the workplace,  and to help them find permanent jobs either with the company where they intern or elsewhere.
